Hey y'all! I hope this message finds you well.
For Torch Literary Arts x The Reading Room HTX Literary Arts Fest Night at The Contemporary Austin, I decided to wear a cottage-inspired silhouette—a soft, free flowing, romantic vibe. Reflecting, it felt fitting for an evening centered around Black women writers, poets, curators, and the stories we carry.

Cottage style can sometimes get reduced to simple aesthetics: wildflowers, linen dresses, pastoral imagery. But underneath those visual cues is something much deeper. Cottage style romanticizes ordinary moments. It finds meaning in slowness and encourages observation.
So does writing.
The evening brought together a community of people who understand the value of paying attention to the details. Writers often notice things others might overlook —a fleeting emotion, a family story, a memory that refuses to loosen its grip. And literature asks us to sit with these moments long enough to understand them. Cottage style asks for something similar. There is a gentleness to both. A willingness to slow down in a culture that often rewards speed and hustle. A belief that everyday experiences are worthy of reflection.
As I listened to readings and conversations throughout the night, I found myself thinking about how many stories begin in seemingly small places: around kitchen tables, on front porches, during walks through familiar neighborhoods. While the settings may appear ordinary, the impact can sometimes become meaningful by way of one's experience. Cottage style has always celebrated those intimate spaces, and literature has always transformed them into something physical and long-lasting.
And with Clockwork occupying the surrounding galleries, it rooted the evening's energy even further. The exhibition’s exploration of systems, memory, and lived experience created an interesting backdrop for a gathering dedicated to storytelling. It served as a reminder that art and literature are often asking the same questions in different languages:
Who are we?
What shapes us?
What stories do we carry forward?
How can we find the beauty in the mundane?
I'll be honest, my outfit wasn't selected with all these beautiful elements in mind. Most meaningful style rarely is. But sometimes a look and an experience find each other unexpectedly; especially, when your life's purpose is to simply be your most authentic self. Things just tend to align. What began as a cottage-inspired outfit became a reflection of the evening itself:
Thoughtful, observant, and grounded in the belief that even the smallest stories deserve to be told.
The Keesh Edit: Cottage style reminds us that not every meaningful story begins with a grand adventure. Some begin in quiet moments, shared conversations, and communities gathered around the simple act of listening. Like literature itself, the beauty is often found in what we choose to notice.
